This page is designed to provide you with listings and links to off-campus housing information. Keep in mind that the College of Charleston does not inspect, assume responsibility for, or endorse a particular landlord or agency by listing it. The presence of the name of a landlord is no representation of quality or safety, just as the absence of a landlord's name is not a reflection of the quality of the landlord. The Office of Residence Life and Housing is not a referral agency, but a center for dispersing off-campus housing information. THESE RESOURCES ARE FOR COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON STUDENTS ONLY!

Off-Campus Housing customer service is available.

While the College of Charleston is not responsible for off-campus living, we feel it is important that students are aware of potential problems involved in leasing an apartment. Apartment leasing is a seller’s market in the Charleston area. Some students sign a lease that is less than satisfactory simply to secure a place to live. When problems arise later, the tenant finds that he or she has signed away rights. The following information should make you more aware of what provisions you need in your lease agreement. Read this carefully and make note of your options before signing anything. Remember the word tenant or lessee means you!

Moving and Storage
Off-campus residents may consider hiring a professional moving company to move furniture and household contents. Moving companies offer local as well as long distance service and can move the contents of a studio apartment or an entire house. A reputable mover should be licensed and insured and provide a detailed written price quote prior to moving day. Ask about lowest price guarantees, hourly moving rates, and discounts on boxes and supplies.

Resident students from outside the Charleston area may find it convenient to store their belongings in a local storage facility over the summer months. Temporary storage unit companies are conveniently located throughout the area and offer a wide variety of basic and optional services including:

Boxes and moving supplies
Climate controlled spaces
Custom sizes
Flexible leases
Insurance coverage for stored valuables
Security gates/camera surveillance
Student discounts

Mobile storage containers such as PODS and UNITS are not permitted on campus due to parking, traffic, and space limitations of our urban campus.

The names of several moving and storage companies are listed here for your convenience. Keep in mind we do not inspect, assume responsibility for, or endorse a particular company:

Renter's Insurance
Students may consider the purchase of renter’s insurance to cover damage and loss to personal property. Many insurance companies offer policies for students living in residence halls and houses, sorority and fraternity houses, and off-campus apartments and houses.

Personal property items typically covered include clothing, furniture, textbooks, computers, electronic devices, bicycles, musical instruments, and sports equipment. If you are studying abroad, several companies offer worldwide personal property coverage. Insurance for items in storage is also available for purchase.

Renter’s insurance coverage usually includes losses from theft, fire, flood, vandalism, natural disasters, and accidental damage. Automobiles and accessories (ex. car stereos and GPS devices), motorcycles, boats, firearms, artwork, currency, and contact lenses are examples of items usually not covered by these policies. A full description of property items that are covered or uncovered, limited coverage, and special provisions will be detailed in the insurance company’s policy booklet.

As a student, you may be covered under your parent’s homeowner’s policy. We recommend that you check with your insurance agent to see if you are covered, or if an additional “rider” is needed to add renter’s coverage or to insure specific expensive personal property such as jewelry. Be sure to ask about the deductible, as insurance companies specializing in renter’s insurance for students may offer lower deductibles. Replacement cost coverage will reimburse you for the actual dollar amount needed to replace the covered items in the event of loss or damage. Typically a one-time premium provides the policy holder coverage for a twelve month period.

While we do not endorse a particular company, the names of several companies that offer personal property insurance products are listed here for your convenience:
