Joe E. Berry Jr.
The Joe E. Berry, Jr. Residence Hall, a six story building at the corner of St. Philip and Calhoun Streets, houses approximately 635 women. Berry Hall features an activity center on the first floor containing two multipurpose rooms, two home theaters, and a lounge area. Floors 2-6 have a group kitchen, TV lounge, laundry facility, and study room. The third floor features a computer lab containing 14 internet capable computers and 3 printers (instead of a study room).

Berry Hall is arranged in suites with two or three bedrooms sharing a common living area and bathroom. The majority of the bedrooms house two students. Each suite has a furnished living area that contains a cafe table with two barstools, one lounge chair and a sofa (in three bedroom suites) or loveseat (in two bedroom suites), one end table, and a TV cube all in a cherry wood finish. Upholsteries contain multiple colors in their patterns to coordinate with almost anyone's color preference. Walls throughout the suites are bright white with charcoal grey trim and natural oak doors. Floor tile is white with colorful decorative strips containing multiple colors. Each living area has cabinetry containing a small microwave and under-counter refrigerator (about 3.6 cubic feet of interior space) that is to be shared by all residents in the suite. Residents are allowed to bring an additional mini-refrigerator for their bedrooms (only one per bedroom). Extra microwaves brought by students are not allowed.

Bedrooms have bright white walls with charcoal grey trim and white tile floors. Bedroom lighting is limited to the room's entrance and therefore residents are encouraged to bring floor or table lamps if more lighting is desired. Please note that halogen lamps are not allowed. Furnishing for each resident include a wardrobe cabinet, bed and mattress, and a desk with a desk chair. Residents share one TV cube in each bedroom. Wardrobe cabinets are 36" wide x 24" deep x 72" high with a cherry wood finish. The top portion of the cabinet has a bar for hanging clothes and the bottom portion of the cabinet contains two drawers (36" wide x 24" deep). Beds are 36" wide x 80" long with 12 1/4" clearance underneath. These beds have metal frames and the mattresses accept only "long" sheets. Plastic risers are allowed to increase clearance underneath by about 6", but concrete block risers are not allowed. Beds are not bunkable or loftable. Desks are 36 " wide x 27" deep with a slide-out drawer for a keyboard and mouse and have a cherry wood finish. TV cubes are 24" wide x 24" deep x 30" high, have two shelves, and have a cherry wood finish.

Each bedroom has one window that varies in size according to floor. First floor windows are 66 1/2" wide x 65" high. Second, third, and fourth floor windows are 26 1/2" wide x 65" high. Fifth and sixth floor windows are 26 1/2" wide x 54" high. Windows are covered with white 2" blinds. As a policy, we only allow tension rods on windows, but because of the size of the blinds, there will not be room for a tension rod. The only way to do a window treatment would be to creatively drape fabric off of the valance of the blinds.

The typical bathroom is shared with three other people, but is compartmentalized with separate small rooms for the toilet, tub/shower and a 6' wide vanity area with two sinks. The vanity has limited drawer and cabinet space for toiletry items. For added storage space, some creative residents have purchased over-toilet cabinets that are floor supported via poles (wall attachment isn't allowed). We encourage residents to keep more valued belongings with them in their bedrooms. Each tub/shower room has two 24" wide towel bars, as well as the tub/shower rod that is 60" wide. New white vinyl shower curtains are placed in the bathrooms each year. Students can dress up the space by adding a decorative curtain to the front if desired.
