RA Position Description

What is a Resident Assistant (RA)?

The Resident Assistant is a live-in student staff position that serves as a resource and source of support for the on-campus residential community. A Resident Assistant (RA) will assist a cohort of residents with adapting to campus living and developing a strong sense of belonging within the College of Charleston.  

An RA can expect to use varied methods for engaging residents, building both individual relationships and community-wide bonds. RAs will empower residents to develop skills that will benefit their overall college experience, including but not limited to interpersonal communication, conflict management, and self-accountability.  

 

Examples of duties include: 

  • Planning and executing structured activities in the residence halls 
  • Staffing information desks 
  • Referring residents to campus resources as needed 
  • Providing after-hours support and community management through a rotating on-call system 
  • Facilitating effective communication between living partners via tools such as Roommate Agreements and structured mediations

Who is eligible? 

The RA position is a part-time opportunity. Training is provided for all necessary job duties and tasks. To be considered for the RA role, applicants must meet the following requirements: 

  • Maintain enrollment as a full-time (12 credit hours), undergraduate student 
  • Retain a GPA of at least 2.5, both semester and cumulative 
  • Be considered in good academic and disciplinary standing with the College 
  • Have lived on a college campus for at least one full semester prior to beginning the RA position 

No prior work experience is required for this position.  

 

What is the compensation?

Compensation for this position includes discounted housing (specific location and placement are at the discretion of the Department of Residence Life) and additional pay. Please note that Residence Life staff are designated as “Essential Personnel” and are committed to providing service to campus beyond standard operating schedules and circumstances.
